United Methodists among volunteer teachers going to China

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Thirteen United Methodists are among the 39 volunteers who will be serving in the Amity Teachers Program in China.
Church World Service, the global service agency of the National Council of Churches, coordinates the recruitment of Amity teachers on behalf of U.S. churches. Orientation for new teachers concluded in June. That group of 18 will leave for the two-year service period on Aug. 2, joining the 21 teachers already in China.
Established in 1985, Amity was created by Chinese Christians who continue to serve on its board. Volunteers work at Chinese universities and colleges, instructing prospective teachers in English as a second language.
The Rev. John McCullough, a United Methodist pastor who serves as executive director of Church World Service, will lead a July 19-31 delegation to China and Hong Kong to meet with the Amity Foundation and its partners and visit Amity projects. Mia Adjali, an executive with the Women's Division, United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, will be a part of the group.
United Methodists in the Amity Teachers Program and their places of assignment are: Russ Elliott of Naperville, Ill., at Yancheng Teachers College in Jiangsu Province; Kay Grimmesey of Upland, Calif., Huanan Women's College, Fujian; Andrea Malzahn of Chaska, Minn., Fuynag Teachers College, Anhui; Danielle Panza of Fort Wayne, Ind., Juijian Teachers College, Jiangxi; Florence Perez of Eden, Texas, Shantong Institute of Education, Ji'an; and Connie Wieck of Marshall, Ill., Inner Mongolia Institute of Continuing Education.
Also, Haidee Aquino of the Philippines, Sanming Teachers College, Fujian; Ellen Barber of Mount Vernon, Wash., Shangrao Teachers College, Jiangxi; William Davis, Aurora, Colo., Shantong Institute of Education, Ji'an; Latosha Glover of Cleveland, Fuzhou Teachers College, Fujian; Clayton Olson, Huron, S.D., Linyi Teachers College, Shantong; Rudilyn Raguindin of the Philippines, Shangrao Teachers College, Jiangxi and Clarence Woodley of Cleveland, Fujian Institute of Education, Fuzhou.
